Joey and James, the famous Js behind JJ’s Plant Based Eats, combined their passion for food to bring the first 100% plant-based restaurant to Sydney.
After meeting at the Cape Breton Farmer’s Market, the two instantly clicked. Although not an immediate decision, conversations began around what their next steps in the food industry would look like.
The idea stemmed from the lack of vegan and vegetarian options in the Sydney area. The two owners wanted to create a comfortable space for vegans to order without worry and for those looking to step outside of their comfort zone.
“Since removing meat and dairy from our diet 4 years ago, my now wife and I would spend our restaurant experience modifying existing menu items to accommodate our diet,” says James, Co-Owner, JJ’s Plant Based Eats. “We seen plant-based restaurants in Halifax and felt there was a need to bring plant-based eats to Cape Breton,” he says.
JJ’s opened their doors in March of 2020 but had to close one week into opening due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We were blown away by the initial response we had after just one week of being open,” says James. “Although we’ve had to shut down and reopen multiple times over the pandemic, it seems that the amount of community support roars back stronger each time.”
“I have to tip my cap to CB Eats for enabling us to do delivery throughout the pandemic. Although we can now operate in-store, a lot of people can’t get to us, and we are thankful to have the delivery piece taken care of”.
